I am sure you all have seen that mini skirts have made a comeback. They were a thing in the 2000s and now the quote from the iconic Paris Hilton “skirts should be the size of a belt” is back. But can we as Christian fashion girls keep up with this trend? Maybe we can.
Alright now I’m not saying wear a skirt the size of a belt, that might be pushing it. But how can we make this work for our modest ways? There are a few things we can do to rock the mini. When we put our skirt on, try bending down. Do you feel like you’re exposing too much skin? Then maybe this skirt doesn’t work for you. Also, do you remember that annoying rule that we all hated back in school? “Skirts must be at your fingertips or longer!” Well…maybe it’s time to embrace that. Now, this rule might not work for all girls! If you’re like me, you might have long arms so wearing a skirt that’s at your fingertips, might look like a maxi! The rule to go by in that case is make sure it doesn’t go above halfway of your thigh. Technically, this would be a midi skirt. But here’s how you can give it the illusion of a mini!
Try using a low waisted skirt, pair this with a long shirt, or maybe a tank top or body suit underneath your shirt. Remember layers are your best friend! If you want to cover up your legs more, try adding some pantyhose. If you want more personality add patterned or textured tights! A plain color skirt, with some plaid tights could look really cute! And it also works with a plaid skirt and plain colored tights. (Your tights don’t have to be black or nude. Be brave and use some colorful ones!)
If the tights just aren’t your thing, but you want some coverage for your legs, try pairing your skirt with some knee high or over the knee boots. These boots will cover most of your legs, so you don’t feel too exposed. (And bonus, they are very fashion forward)
And make sure you have the right fit and material. Thicker fabrics, such as tweed, corduroy, and denim, give coverage and prevent the skirt from clinging. So, instead of going for a body hugging mini, go for a structured or a line mini. These not only flatter your shape, but they are also more modest than a tight mini.
And always wear shorts underneath. These shorts prevent any accidental exposure, so you will always stay modest. They’re also a good guideline for how your skirt should fit you. If you are comfortable with your short length, and feel like they fit your modest standards, your skirt should match that length!
Remember modesty is what is inside your heart, and it is what YOU feel honors God. Try to honor Him through all of your clothing.
